The next Basic Skills Program begins in September 2008

 

Registration information will be available by August 1 on this website.  If you have skated with us in the last year, you will receive a mailing.

Registration Information

  • Full Payment is due at the time of registration.   

  • We do not accept credit or debit cards.

  • Please make checks payable to The Bourne Skating Club. 

  • No refunds will be given after the second class, unless there is a documented medical reason.

  • No Makeup Sessions due to illness or personal conflict are allowed.

  • Classes are filled on a first come, first serve basis.

  • Our classes are for the skater alone not a joint lesson with skater and parent.  

  • To register for classes, please mail in or drop off completed registration form.

Required Skating Attire

 

  • All skaters should wear warm comfortable clothing and are required to wear gloves or mittens and a hat.

  • Beginning skaters (Snowplow Sam 1-3 and Basic 1) are required to wear a helmet (bicycle is fine).

  • Hockey skates are allowed but a facemask helmet is strongly suggested.

  • No double blades skates are allowed.

  • Skate rental is available ($3.00/session); however, it is recommended that you bring your own skates.

 

Basic Skills Information and Levels

 

  • This program is registered with United States Figure Skating (USFS).

  • Fun, challenging and rewarding skating curriculums for children age four and older, all ability levels.

  • Skaters are grouped by age and ability.  They will be placed in one of the following levels.

  • Skaters will be evaluated at the end of the session to determine their progress and placement needs for the next session. 

  • As a brand new USFS Basic Skills skater, you receive a test booklet with all skating levels and requirements.  This test booklet unfortunately can not be replaced but a test page can be given if your booklet is lost.

Snowplow Sam:  Snowplow Sam 1-3 designed to help skaters age 4-6 develop preliminary coordination and strength to maneuver on the ice. 

 Snowplow Sam 1
  • Sit and stand up with skates on: off ice

  • Sit and stand up: on ice

  • March in place

  • March forward (8-10 steps)

  • March, then glide on 2 feet

  • Dip in place

Snowplow Sam 2

  • March followed by a long glide

  • Dip while moving

  • Backward wiggles (6 in a row)

  • Forward 2-foot swizzles (2-3 in a row)

  • Rocking horse: one forward, one backward swizzle action

  • 2-foot hop in place

Snowplow Sam 3

  • Forward skating (8-10 steps)

  • Forward one-foot glide (R&L)

  • Forward swizzles (4-6 in a row)

  • Backward swizzles (4-6 in a row)

  • Forward snowplow stop with skid

  • Curves

Basic Skills: Basic 1-8 designed for skaters age 6 and older.  It introduces skaters to the fundamentals of skating. 

Basic 1

  • Sit on ice and stand up

  • March forward across the ice

  • Forward two-foot glide

  • Dip

  • Forward swizzles: 6-8 in a row

  • Backward wiggles: 6-8 in a row

  • Snowplow stop

  • Rocking Horse: 2-3

  • Two foot hop in place (optional)

Basic 2

  • Forward one foot glides: right and left

  • Backward two foot glide

  • Backward swizzles: 6-8 in a row

  • Two foot turn from forward to backward in place

  • Moving snowplow stop

  • Forward alternating 1/2 swizzle pumps, in a straight line (slalom-like pattern)

Basic 3

  • Forward stroking, showing correct use of blade
  • Forward 1/2 swizzle pumps on a circle: 6-8 consecutive clockwise and counter-clockwise
  • Moving forward to backward two foot turn, clockwise and counterclockwise
  • Backward one-foot glides: right and left
  • Forward slalom
  • Two foot spin: up to 2 revolutions

Basic 4

  • Forward outside edge on a circle: right and left
  • Forward inside edge on a circle: right and left
  • Forward crossovers: clockwise and counter-clockwise
  • Forward outside three-turn: right and left, from a stand still position
  • Backward 1/2 swizzle pumps on a circle: clockwise and counter-clockwise
  • Backward stroking
  • Backward snowplow stop: right and left

Basic 5

  • Backward outside edge on a circle: right and left
  • Backward inside edge on a circle: right and left
  • Backward crossovers: clockwise and counter-clockwise
  • One foot spin: up to 3 revolutions, optional entry and free foot position
  • Hockey stop
  • Side toe hop: both directions

Basic 6

  • Forward inside three-turn: right and left, from a standstill position
  • Moving backward to forward two foot turn on a circle: clockwise and counter-clockwise
  • T-stop: right or left
  • Bunny hop
  • Forward arabesque/spiral on a straight line: right or left
  • Forward lunge: right or left

Basic 7

  • Forward inside open Mohawk from a standstill position: right to left and left to right
  • Backward outside edge to forward outside edge transition on a circle: right and left
  • Ballet jump: right or left
  • Backward crossovers to a backward outside edge glide: (landing position) clockwise and counter-clockwise
  • Forward inside pivots: right or left

Basic 8

  • Moving forward outside three-turn on a circle: right and left
  • Moving forward inside three-turn on a circle: right and left
  • Combination move: Forward crossovers (2) into forward inside Mohawk, cross behind, step into backward crossover (1) and step to forward inside edge: repeat 3 times: clockwise and counter-clockwise
  • One foot spin: optional entry and free foot position
  • Waltz jump
  • Mazurka: right or left
